The Funniest and the Saddest Thing I've Seen Today.
One of my jobs is to babysit the third grade students at lunch time.
Today I witnessed a third grade boy unpack his lunch from home. It consisted of a gallon sized Ziploc that wasn't zipped filled with crunched up plain potato chips with chocolate sandwich cookies
intermingled. I THINK he had at least part of a pb and j but not a whole one -perhaps he ate the balance as he waited in line. I asked him if he had packed his own lunch and he beamed an affirmation.
Little kids are crazy funny.

i'm sure mom didn't supervise, i would have never, never let a GALLON zip bag out of the house for lunch, those are special!
heh. Kids are funny...
Glad to see you....
Funny sure, but you have to wonder where the hell the parents were?
How are you?
Greeny glad you're back. You can never tell about a kid's lunch. Sometimes at school I see a kid and say what are you eating... Last week a student told me nothing, later she came up to me while in line so I bought her a bit of food.
But on the other hand our baby, absolutely hates eating in crowds. She is a little weird. When we go out to eat she politely says she is not eating and she's the same way at school. She comes home and eats like a locust.
Every year the teachers freak out because she does't eat much lunch. We reassure them that she actually does eat. Earlier this year I was fired from making her lunch because I did it wrong.
I applaud his initiative. He can work on nutrition and economics later. Some lessons are best learned glycemically.
Glad to read your smile, Greeny.
That REALLY scared me until you said that he had at least part of a PB & J!
Well, it still scares me a little. I'm thinking he's not developing the healthiest of eating habits...
I suspect there is no mom but grandparents but don't know the family story.
Anne, you crack me up.
I think that very thing every day as I work, Manicurist.
Iamnot, this kid is a hoot in a lot of ways and I think even if he HAD parents, he would try some stunt like this anyway.
I am doing ok, thanks. Plowing ahead like some stubborn, hormonal and unbalanced mule.
Mathman, we as a school are on the lookout for any problems like this and make sure something gets done to rectify the situation, usually with very delicate maneuvering so as not to upset anyone. Tricky.
My oldest exhibited some of that same behavior early on but she has outgrown it so maybe yours will become less weirded out about it. Bless her heart.
AM, every day in a school lunch room I wonder how we can say we are providing children with a nutritious meal. It is better than going hungry, however and my son would agree. This kid isn't eating anything worse than his peers are.
Perhaps two days out of five, we provide a decent meal. The rest of the time its high fat, high sugar and many preservatives since it's all processed. The same can be said about the breakfasts we serve.
HI Miss Healthypants.
I'm glad I cracked you up, that was my goal; I sense you could use a couple more smiles in your day.
sounds like a good lunch to me.
Glad to have you back
my son hates sandwhiches and the school lunches they sell. my son is 10 he wants to pack his own lunch. he'll take a cold pork chop or chicken with string cheese and some fruit. They only give them 20 min to eat anyhow. i'm sure peolple think my sons lunch is weird too. p.s. cookies and chips salty and sweet--my kind of snack.
Yay! You're blogging again.
Kids are funny, indeed. And they know the full inventory of every piece of junk to be found at home.
