I gave blood for the first time yesterday at our local United Methodist church where the bloodmobile locates every three months. It wasn't bad all in all until the nurse had to push the needle father in a couple more times after the initial stick. My veins play hard to get at sometimes even though I'm not a scaredy cat. Sorta made me a bit squeamish but after that it was smooth sailing. Nice to know I'm not anemic which is something one finds out. Also, I can check my cholesterol in a few weeks online to see what I'm at. Not a fair score though, since I wasn't fasting.
My blood pressure was 117 over 75- not bad and my heart rate was 61.
An interesting fact- the Amish in our community come in to give blood at an astounding rate. The bloodmobile sets the afternoon hours at this church particularly so the Amish can come in after they come in from the field.

Tomorrow is J's 13 birthday. He had a sleepover (not an accurate description of what went on) last Friday and got his present of a bike on Sunday. He would like some homemade ice cream and a fried chicken birthday meal. I hate frying chicken especially in this heat but anything for the baby.

E is in band camp all this week and let me tell you, I would like to move to another state. Not only is she not used to being outside in the heat, we have heat indexes of 110-115 degrees this week. She is also PMSing. ACK! That should tell you a lot right there. Change of subject.

My mother is coming for a visit this week. I think there is a visit planned to see the new baby.
It should be good for her to get away. She has been handling a lot of legal matters and paperwork. Nothing fun.

My son just had the window fall on his thumb. Lovely. Anyone care to lay bets on fingernail loss or no loss?

That birthday dinner won't help the cholesterol level, but mmmm, yum.
Ouch! I hope he doesn't lose the nail. Please, no photos of that one!

Hell, I'm up for fried chicken!
Sounds like the normal stuff I think. Hang in there.

My mom used to fry chicken at home..but it's been KFC for as long as I can remember. As for the thumb.. I predict a nice hue of purple, but no nail loss. What do I win if I get this right?

Hope you are all doing OK during this difficult time.

AM, I don't have the vaguest idea what my cholesterol is but I guess Im gonna find out. I had ice cream and Oreos and some bruschetta right before I went so uh-oh.
Iamnot, you would be welcomed to my fried chicken meal. The family has a secret ingredient we call Lawrey's Seasoned Salt. It makes the coating scrumptious.
Markec, I love KFC even now.
The thumb got an immediate ice down so I think we've avoided some bruising and swelling-maybe. As long as there is no doctor visit Im good. (Yeah, since it's all about me..)
I'm doing alright and thanks for asking. I have days where I can't think of anything else but that's to be expected. And I worry about my mom.

I love 13 year old boys - they are so very 13 and weird and grown and little and confused.
the thing about teenagers is that they do outgrow it, but in they meantime it is a roller coaster ride.

Give your mom a big hug from this mom.

Thanks Simon. He'll like that from you.
Mom I like 13 years boys for the same reasons but only if they aren't too hateful. I'm lucky the ones I have around aren't very bad.

Oh, Kimmy you failed to read that properly... SHE's AT HOME! The camp is just day camp but all week. Luckily we've had a break in the weather. My salvation..

Anne, you probably didn't HAVE this kinda heat- maybe that's why it's hard to remember. I would have so loved band in college and wouldn't have cared about the heat too much. High school band would have been a farce, however.

You somehow manage to take the mundane and make it interesting. The window on the thumb made me laugh, although I'm sorry if it hurt your son.
Glad you're healthy and able to help your Mom these days. Family is the cure for most diseases.

Mmmmmm, love fried chicken. Good for you on giving blood. We have the same veins, my friend. I had no idea you could get your cholesterol numbers these days. Dang, I'm scared to know those.

Any updates on the nail? Is it a purple testament to what happened?

Hi, lisa p. The nurse that took my blood told me the wonderful things you can learn when you give blood. That's the only reason I know it now.
J's thumb didn't get purple partly because we iced it almost immediately. It spurted blood out when it happened too so I guess he was lucky. No nail loss, it looks like!

Eek! Spurted out blood, eh. The joys of parenthood. I never had the stomach for a career in nursing and yet I became a mom. Insanity. Glad it all worked out well.
