I started buying a brand of milk that comes in a glass half gallon bottle from our local grocery store. It's produced from cows that don't receive growth hormones or antibiotics, produced just up the road in a small town. Heck, a few of the guys who milk the cows are sons of one of my best friends. It costs $2.49 a tasty half gallon as opposed to the plastic gallon jug at $4.15.
We used to make it a week with our old plastic gallon of milk before we needed more. Guess how long it takes us to finish a half gallon of our yummy happy cow milk? 1 and 1/2 days.
I may buy my own cow.

Sounds delicious, bet it makes great ice cream too! I wonder if one cow can make 2+ gallons of milk a week? Maybe two?

I have one - she's called "The Wife"... just kidding of course.
I now have a vision of your back yard with a big brown heffer standing there chewing the cud and having that special 'vacant' look that all cows have while you sit on your little milking stool pulling away...heheh

Hi, Mathman and yeah, this milk is really good although they don't tout it as organic since I would suppose the feed isn't organic. They do have lovely Ozark acreage the cows wander on- I'm sure that makes them happy.
I think it's IS actually better in taste because it's in glass just like beer is better from glass. It is fresher and sweeter to me. It's way more costly but this is place I thought might be good to regulate our intake of questionable ingredients.
Markec, ohmygosh, I can't wait for summer because they sell whole milk with the cream still on the top (slobberrrr) so ice cream would be unbelievable using that.

Hey, Simon, you're going to cause me to lose my "G" rating here....
A sweet brown cow in my back yard--hhmmm, I don't think it would fly with the neighbors, although I hear roosters crowing at sunup here in town.

Oh, yeah, baby. When I was a kid, my mom bought milk from a woman in our church...every week we'd drive to their house to get a box that held 4 gallon jars. The milk was from their cows and not even pasturized. Each gallon had a good 2-3 inches of golden cream on the top. Best. Milk. Ever.
