Guess what? We have a half day of school this Friday because of professional development. Can you believe it? We just completed a whole week out of school but a certain amount of state madated professional development must be completed for each school year so...It really has no bearing on me other than the children get out early while I stay and look busy. The classroom teachers meet to work on classroom curriculum and the mess of testing coming up in spring. Since I pull out small groups or push into the classrooms, I'm not really part of the testing thinktank group. Thinking is not my forte- tanking, however, very much is. Heehee

Speaking of small group pull out, yesterday for my 3rd grade reading group of 4 boys, we read a story that introduced Hans Christian Andersen while highlighting his story "The Nightingale". The boys were entranced which doesn't happen very often. So I thought this would be a good time to delve into Hans Christian Andersen and his fairy tales. It makes me feel great to see an introduction to an author received so well. I remember reading "The Brave Tin Soldier" and feeling so sad.

Time for math. Gotta go.

I didn't know you taught 3rd grade?

My son is a lover of books but I know that he's the exception. I know it's hard to get kids engrossed when the have I-pods and x-boxes to occupy their tiny minds.

I love the feeling when someone I do engages young minds.

It's the same thing here with the PD days -

Catching the attention and imagination of grade 4 boys with a story is no easy challenge. Kudos to you.

this Hans Christian Anderson quote reminds me of you

We have similar things here in the UK - teacher training days. The thing that winds me up a little is that we have say three weeks with the kids off school... and then what SHOULD be the first day back at school gets changed to a teacher training day so we have to find childcare cover for an extra day! I mean, why not have the teacher training day on the first day of the holidays?? ggrrrrr... although I can't have a go at teachers too much as my mother in law is a retired teacher, and my brother in law and his wife are teachers.

Jetpass, I am a Title I aide which has included everything from running our Accelerated Reading reading and computerized testing program) library to pushing into 1st thru 5th during math offering extra help to pinpointed students.
I also pull out small groups in k-3 for reading. We have lots of materials at our disposal and I only work with kids that need a bit of support to get back to the classroom.

I agree its fantastic to see our children love to read since it might mean in the end they will turn out a bit well-rounded as an adult fingers crossed).

Thanks kate! You know it's a hit-or-miss thing with learning.

Haha, ws! Wise you are. Like you, I do.

Awww, Mom, that is one I'll have to look up.

I can't ever remember getting a lot of days off like that when I was a kid, but my kids seem to have several days off a year. sheesh.

I enjoyed many days off during the school year. the problem was I liked to take them while the other kids were in school. The stores were less crowded that way.

Hi, Anne. I do get tired of always saying things like "When I was a kid...." but it's true- things are not at all like they used to be for kids in school. It's sad but reality.
And I would never say of any profession that I could do it better than the people now employed to do it because I have worked in education and see first hand what actually goes on in a day in the life of a teacher.

It's misunderstood that teachers get tons of time off with nothing to do and anyone who knows someone in teaching knows that fact.
I don't even have a clssroom and I am worn out in a day.

John skipped schoo-ol, John skipped schoo-ol! (said in sing-songy fashion like I am tattling.)
